Surroundings & Activities

Venngasthof Zur Buche is located approximately 4.5 kilometers from the center of the climatic health resort Monschau. The Eifelsteig (2nd section “Roetgen-Monschau”) can be reached from our 3-star guesthouse (DEHOGA award from February 2011, renewed 2020) at a distance of approximately 300 meters. The Eifelsteig itself is one of the “10 Top-Trails of Germany”. Here, maximum hiking pleasure in a diverse landscape combines with excellent hospitality.

Our house is located approx. 2.5 km from the new RAVeL Route (Vennbahn railway line from Aachen to Luxembourg).

The town of Monschau is THE number one tourist destination in the Eifel.

The historic Old Town of Monschau attracts visitors with countless cultural impressions, whether museums like the Red House (home of a cloth manufacturer), the Monschau Art and Culture Center in the former tax office of the town of Monschau, the historic Mustard Mill in Monschau, or the Printing Museum in Imgenbroich, or the historic Castle (where the event “Monschau-Klassik takes place annually in mid-summer) with the opposing castle ruin “Haller”. The castle itself can be reached on foot, but can also be conveniently reached by the Monschau City Railway.

City tours and tours through the High Fens can be booked directly with us at the hotel.

Also worth mentioning is the Monschau Christmas Market, which is one of the most beautiful historic Christmas markets in all of Germany. Visit the Monschau Christmas Market on one of the four Advent weekends. Please note our special offers for the Christmas season.

The High Fens: It is one of the largest nature reserves in all of Germany. The High Fens consists almost exclusively of heavily wooded heathland, deep moorlands, and deciduous forests. Here you will encounter diverse wildlife with many rare species. In the High Fens, a variety of signposted forest paths are maintained, some of which run over the wooden boardwalks typical for the Fens. The entrance to the High Fens is approx. 300 m from our house.

The Harvest Festival in Mützenich (first weekend in October), long known as a special attraction in the Monschau region, is now also gaining nationwide attention (Mützenich typically sees about 6,000 visitors on this weekend). The highest elevation in Mützenich is the Stehling (659 meters above sea level). Also visit – in the immediate vicinity – Emperor Charles’s Bedstead (according to legend, Emperor Charles spent the night on this large Vennstone).

In the center of Mützenich – near the church – you will find the village museum “Uralt Scholl” (=ancient school), where you can learn about rural life in Mützenich of the generations who lived here before us.
